Project idea

Packaging waste from disposable packaging is constantly increasing due to our consumption, despite discussions about sustainability and climate change. The increase in delivery services has further strengthened this trend. Unfortunately, the majority of packaging is still made of plastic or aluminum. Often disposable tableware based on cellulose is coated with a PE, PET or PLA layer to make it more resistant.

Project approach

Beepkd is a new type of packaging and disposable tableware, made of cellulose with a sustainable and compostable surface coating. The basis of the coating is wax of natural origin. Due to the combination of natural raw materials, the material remains recyclable. The coating is suitable to be applied on 3D shaped objects due to the application process. The coating makes the scooped vessels more resistant to grease, oil and water.

The coating is intended to provide an alternative to conventional coatings made of PE, PET and PLA. The project is at the intersection of product design and material research. The product design is intended to communicate the material and the novel coating. The idea is to use good design to communicate an invisible, alternative coating and make it more attractive.
